Russian folklore encompasses a rich tradition of stories and fairytales known as skazki, tracing back to pre-Christian Rus’. It has evolved through historical challenges such as Christianisation and political manipulation under the Soviet Union. Key figures include Baba Yaga, originally a pagan goddess figure later reinterpreted as a witch. The folklore has been codified and studied since the 19th century, serving roles from cultural preservation to political propaganda. In modern times, Russian folklore continues to thrive, adapting to new media and reflecting contemporary social themes while maintaining its significance as a unifying cultural heritage.
