Phonology is a branch of linguistics that studies the organization and usage of speech sounds in natural languages. It is closely related to phonetics, which deals with the smallest chunks of language. Phonetics is connected to other linguistic disciplines like morphology, as adding morphemes can change the meaning of words and their pronunciation. It is also related to syntax, as the function of a word in a sentence can affect its pronunciation with a shifted phrasal stress and changed intonation.
