Kurash is a kind of national waist belt fight, traditional among the Turkic peoples and officially included in the world’s network of non-Olympic sports, supported by UNESCO. It originated in Uzbekistan about 3,500 years ago. Kurash is mentioned in the ancient legendary epos Alpomysh as one of the most popular and favorite kinds of single combat. Historian and philosopher Herodotus described kurash in detail in his work "History", alongside other customs and traditions of ancient Uzbekistan. Avicena believed that kurash is not only beneficial for the body but also for the spirit. Tamerlane introduced kurash to his fitness and self-protection program for the soldiers of his troops.
